Solar energy panels (Photo: GettyImages)It might seem surprising to see solar power as a viable source of energy in connection with the circumpolar North. But despite long periods of darkness during the wintertime there are opportunities for solar power even in high latitudes.

When talking about solar energy in the Arctic, it usually means photovoltaic installations as there are currently no solarthermic installations.

Solar panels are installed as means to support building heating or heating of water.

There is currently an experimental power plant in Piteå, Sweden expected to produce 28 MW with the newest technology in the field of photovoltaic solar cells.

The area has also been shown to have extremely good wind conditions, and it has been decided that more than a thousand wind turbines will be set up there.
